Location
As the Somewhere team continues to explore a multitude of previously utilized surface mines across Eastern Kentucky many different locations have been considered. It is Somewhere's mission to develop tourist destinations in multiple communities along a central spine in Eastern Kentucky and the process is well under way. This page will be updated periodically with more concrete information regarding specific locations as we continue to look at and consider all of these amazing potential sites.
Our team is partnering with UK College of Design and its Studio Appalachia to embark on a site master planning exercise determining the potential architectural program and space use of the redevelopment project. Graduate and undergraduate students, some from Appalachia, some from other parts of the country, are studying precedents for mine redevelopment and its possibilities here in Kentucky.
The UK Team is led by Jeffrey Johnson, Dean, UK School of Architecture; Brent Sturlaugson, Assistant Professor, UK School of Architecture; and two visiting professors, Adam Snow Frampton, AIA, Principal and Karolina Częczek, Principal, of Only-If, a NYC-based design practice. The student work will be exhibited regionally with opportunities for comment.
